XDefiant, a live-service shooter that launched in May, was shut down as Ubisoft closed several studios and laid off hundreds of staff. Announcing the game’s cancellation via a blog post, Ubisoft thanked the team and fans for their “continued dedication.”
XDefiant, Ubisoft’s ambitious free-to-play FPS, has been shut down by Ubisoft, ending the shooter after just six months. In a blog post, Ubisoft’s Marie-Sophie de Waubert blamed the decision on a failure to attract new players.
As a result of the game’s cancellation, Ubisoft prevented new downloads, player registrations, and purchases. The third season is still to launch, with XDefiant’s servers going offline permanently on June 3, 2025. Unfortunately, XDefiant’s cancellation came with the closure of two studios and severe staff reductions at a third studio, resulting in 277 staff being laid off.
Ubisoft’s Layoffs and Company Restructuring
The cancellation of Recent releases like Star Wars: Outlaws have only made things worse, forcing Ubisoft to restructure and restrategize.
Amid continued stock decline, Ubisoft revealed layoffs of 45 employees from Ubisoft San Francisco and Red Storm Entertainment in August, following the cancellation of The Division: Heartland and poor fan reaction to the release of XDefiant.
In September, Ubisoft reversed its decision not to publish the game on Steam. As the company needs additional revenue streams, Star Wars: Outlaws is the first new Ubisoft game to launch on Valve’s platform, with Assassin’s Creed Shadows coming day one in 2025.
As part of Ubisoft’s ongoing restructuring, the company has announced yet another layoff. This time, production studios in San Francisco and Osaka were closed, and Sydney was “increasing,” with 143 and 134 people affected.
What’s Next for Ubisoft
2025 will be an important year for Ubisoft, as the developer and publisher commits to “radically” evolving its production and business practices. There are also persistent rumors that Tencent is considering acquiring Ubisoft.
Despite a reduction of nearly 300 staff and the closure of XDefiant on June 3, 2025, fans can still look forward to Assassin’s Creed Shadows. The upcoming action-adventure game is coming to PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on February 14, 2025.
